We're a small team in Steinbach, and we're hiring.

The founders spent years working around software built by people who never ran a plant. Now we write it, and we want more people who know the work.

Most people should not work here

A note from our founders before you apply.

We started mode40 to build the firm we always wished we could hire, so we only hire people we’d have wanted to start it with.

We spent years inside operations, working around software built by people who’d never run a line. We know what that costs a plant and the people on the floor. You won’t have to explain it to us.

Here is the honest version of the job. We’re a small team headquartered in Steinbach, Manitoba, with people across Canada and the United States. You get more responsibility than feels fair, on a real customer’s floor, and you see the number your work moved. Nobody hands you a playbook. Feedback is constant and runs both ways.

That pace suits some people and wears others out. If it sounds like the job you’ve been looking for, we’d like to meet you.

Cameron Bergen and Tracy Gromniski

How we work together

  1. 01.Three fingers before you ask

Exhaust three routes on your own first: try a teammate, write down your three options, run the experiment. Then ask, and ask anyone.

  2. 02.Everyone's door, from day one

There is no chain to go up. If you need the CEO, you talk to the CEO. Nobody here waits for a meeting invite to do the obvious thing.

  3. 03.Candour is a job requirement

Feedback happens continuously and in both directions. There are no annual reviews, because a year is a long time to sit on something useful.

  4. 04.Mistakes are tuition, repeats are not

Getting something wrong won't cost you your job. Repeating it, ignoring the feedback, or arguing with reality is a different matter.

  5. 05.Deep in one thing, good across the rest

We pass on brilliant specialists who cannot collaborate, and on generalists with no edge.

  6. 06.Meetings are for decisions

Short, pointed, and a decision at the end. Declining one is normal. Leaving one that stopped being about you is also normal.

  7. 07.The floor is the source of truth

We are practitioners. The answer is on the plant floor, in the historian, in the head of the person running the line, and that is where we go to get it.

  8. 08.No jerks

Talent does not buy anyone an exemption. The bar for how people treat each other is the same at every level.
